Sankalp Diwas: A Spark that changed the fate of India

Today, on Sankalp Diwas, we celebrate a pivotal moment that shaped the destiny of India. It wasn't a grand ceremony or a public declaration. It was a solitary oath, a quiet resolve made by a young Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar under the shade of a banyan tree in Sayaji Baug, Vadodara, on September 23rd, 1917.

But what made this seemingly ordinary act so extraordinary? To understand the magnitude of Dr. Ambedkar's Sankalp (resolution), we need to step back and paint a picture of the world he inhabited.

Imagine a time when education was a distant dream for most, let alone pursuing higher studies abroad. Now, imagine belonging to a community ostracized and discriminated against solely based on birth. This was the reality for Dr. Ambedkar, a man from a "backward" caste who defied all odds.

He possessed a remarkable intellect, evident by the degrees he earned – M.A., M.Sc., Ph.D., M.Phil., D.Sc., LL.D., Bar-at-Law, and D.Litt from prestigious institutions like Columbia University and the London School of Economics. Just the thought of someone achieving such academic feats 107 years ago is mind-blowing. But Dr. Ambedkar's life wasn't defined by his degrees. It was a constant struggle against a deeply entrenched caste system. Despite his achievements, he faced daily reminders of his "untouchable" status. Even as the military secretary for the princely state of Baroda, he was treated differently. Peons wouldn't share a glass with him, and some even believed the office needed "purification" after he left.

It's against this backdrop that Dr. Ambedkar's Sankalp becomes truly awe-inspiring. Here was a man, ostracized yet learned, resolved to fight not just for himself, but for millions like him. Sitting alone under that banyan tree, with tears welling up in his eyes, he took a vow to eradicate the caste system from the very fabric of India.

Sankalp Diwas isn't just about celebrating a historical event. It's a call to action for each one of us. Here are some key takeaways from Dr. Ambedkar's life and his Sankalp:

1. The Power of Resolve: Change, even large-scale social change, starts with a single step – a firm resolve. Dr. Ambedkar's story reminds us that even the most seemingly insurmountable obstacles can be overcome with unwavering determination.

2. Education is the Key: Education empowers individuals and communities. Dr. Ambedkar's pursuit of knowledge, despite all the hurdles, serves as a powerful message. Education equips us to fight for our rights and build a better future.

3. Action Speaks Louder Than Words: Resolutions are meaningless without action. Every New Year's resolution pales in comparison to Dr. Ambedkar's Sankalp. He didn't just make a vow; he dedicated his entire life to fulfilling it.

4. Working Towards a Casteless Society: Dr. Ambedkar's vision wasn't just about abolishing caste. It was about creating a society where everyone has equal opportunities, regardless of birth. Sankalp Diwas is a reminder that we all have a role to play in dismantling caste-based discrimination.

Here's how you can contribute:

Educate Yourself: The first step is understanding the caste system and its impact. Read books, watch documentaries, and engage in open discussions.

Challenge Prejudices: We all have unconscious biases. Be mindful of your own and challenge those of others. Don't shy away from difficult conversations.

Promote Equality: Advocate for equal opportunities in education, employment, and social interactions. Support initiatives that empower marginalized communities.

Celebrate Diversity: India's rich tapestry is woven with diverse cultures and communities. Celebrate this diversity and learn from each other.

Dr. Ambedkar's Sankalp wasn't just his; it became the foundation for a more just and equitable India. Let's honor his legacy by working towards a future where caste lines blur and opportunities are abundant for all.

Remember, change starts with each one of us. Let Dr. Ambedkar's Sankalp Diwas be a day of inspiration and action.

Together, we can build a better India!
